15. What about chat? What is it?

Chat Chat is a way to "talk" in real time with people all around the world. In most cases, you don't need any special software, just your web browser.

Real Time
When something on your computer happens in real time, it means that it is happening at the same speed that it happens in real life.

During a chat, you're not really talking to anyone, just typing and reading messages. Once you enter a chat room, you can choose to only read the messages, known as lurking, or you can join in and post your own.

Chat Room
A chat room is a web page that runs special software that lets you type messages to one or more people.

Lurker
A lurker is a person that hangs out in chat rooms, reading messages, but rarely writing any.

Post
Post means to send a note you wrote to a chat room or other group of people on the Internet.

Many chat rooms focus on specific topics, such as movies, games, and so on. That way, kids with similar interests can find one another.

In some chat rooms, you can become a cartoon character and move around the room. It's just like being in a comic strip!

Chats can be really exciting-a terrific way to make new friends-but they can also be a waste of time, with lots of kids just saying "hello" to each other. Anyway, the price is certainly right--it's free--so why not give it a try?
