12. How does e-mail work?
Back Next

How e-mail works Just as a letter makes stops at different postal stations along its way, e-mail passes from one computer, called a mail server, to another as it travels over the Internet. Once it arrives at its destination, the message is stored in an electronic mailbox until your friend retrieves it. With the Internet, this whole process takes seconds. You can send e-mail to anyone who has an e-mail address, anywhere in the world.

To get e-mail, you need an e-mail account. This is similar to having an address where you can receive letters.

Mail Server
A mail server is a computer connected to the Internet that routes e-mail and stores it in electronic mailboxes.
